What exactly is “Overnight Weetbix”?

Overnight Weetbix has become quite a big rage on social media the past couple of months and for very good reason! It’s similar to overnight oats in a sense but, in my opinion, even better!

NOTE: despite the name, you don’t need to wait overnight to enjoy your “overnight” Weetbix you can actually eat it straight away!

It’s made by combining Weetabix with milk and layering on some yogurt and other toppings. As I mentioned before, it’s really versatile, and you can literally put anything in that you would typically find in a bowl of porridge. Yogurt, protein powder, nuts, fruit, nut butter, etc.

Overnight Weetbix is great for meal prep because it’s quick and easy to prepare, and it keeps well in the fridge all week long. It’s also a great way to get in loads of protein and fiber to start your day on the right foot and keep you full and satisfied for hours.

What to use instead of protein powder?

Four out of five of these recipes call for protein powder in the yogurt layer. If you’re not a fan of protein powder, there’s a very easy fix: simply omit the protein powder and add some honey or maple syrup to the yogurt. This will provide a bit of sweetness, and your Overnight Weetabix will still be delicious!

Tips & Notes

  • Adjusting Sweetness – If you’re not using protein powder, add a natural sweetener like honey, maple syrup, or agave to the yogurt layer for extra flavor.
  • Milk Choices – Any milk works! Use dairy milk for a richer taste or opt for almond, oat, soy, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Make it Vegan – Swap out the yogurt for a dairy-free alternative like coconut or soy yogurt and use a plant-based protein powder or extra cocoa powder instead.
  • Meal Prep Friendly – Overnight Weetbix can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. This makes them perfect for meal prep!
  • Best Containers to Use – Use small airtight containers, meal prep jars, or Tupperware for easy grab-and-go breakfasts.
  • Layering Matters – Pressing the Weetbix base firmly helps prevent it from getting too soggy while spreading the yogurt layer evenly ensures a balanced bite.

How to store overnight Weetbix

Refrigeration – Store your Overnight Weetbix in an airtight container or a covered bowl in the fridge. It will stay fresh for up to 5 days.

Best Containers to Use – Glass jars, Tupperware, or meal prep containers work well. If using a bowl, cover it tightly with a lid or plastic wrap to prevent drying out.

Can You Freeze Overnight Weetbix? – Freezing is not recommended as it can alter the texture, making it watery and mushy once thawed.

Serving After Storage – If your Overnight Weetbix thickens too much in the fridge, stir in a splash of milk or yogurt before eating to adjust the consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat Overnight Weetbix immediately?

Yes! Despite the name, you don’t have to wait overnight. It can be eaten right away, but letting it sit for at least 30 minutes allows the flavors to develop and the texture to soften.

Can I use something other than Weetbix?

Weetbix (or Weetabix) is best for this recipe because of its absorbent texture. However, you can try bran flakes, crushed oats, or wholegrain cereal biscuits as a substitute, but the texture may vary.

Can I make Overnight Weetbix dairy-free?

Absolutely! Simply use dairy-free milk, yogurt, and protein powder. Coconut yogurt, almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk are great alternatives.

How long does Overnight Weetbix last in the fridge?

It stays fresh for up to five days if stored properly in an airtight container in the fridge.

Can I make it without protein powder?

Yes! Just replace the protein powder with extra yogurt and a sweetener like honey or maple syrup. You can also add chia seeds or nut butter for an extra boost of protein.

Can I heat up Overnight Weetbix?

Yes! If you prefer it warm, microwave it for 30 to 60 seconds before adding your toppings.

Can I make a large batch for the week?
