These Protein Twix Bites are the perfect treat when you’re craving something sweet. They’re incredibly easy to make, require no baking, and are made with healthy ingredients. A soft, chewy, nutty base topped with peanut caramel, dipped in dark chocolate. It’s a little bite of heaven with a protein boost.

No-Bake Protein Twix Bites.

I truly believe that homemade candy is top-tier. Twix Bars are one of my favorite chocolate bars, but shop-bought Twix is not the most nourishing choice. While I have no problem with eating proper chocolate bars, I love recreating classic treats using healthy ingredients – that way you KNOW what is going into your food, and you know that it’s good for you.

I also love finding ways to sneak in some extra protein throughout my days – these Protein Twix Bites do just that. By using some protein powder in the base as well as the addition of nuts and nut butter, these little protein Twix bites pack a protein punch and healthy fats while tasting delicious and satisfying your sweet tooth.

They’re incredibly easy to make, and might I even suggest: fun to make!? It’s just a matter of making the base, then the caramel, layering, freezing, and coating in dark chocolate, and you’re left with a delicious healthy sweet snack or dessert. I hope that you love these as much as I do!

Ingredients and Substitutions

I’ve listed the eight ingredients below, as well as some substitutions just below this section. To see the measurements and full recipe, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this page!

Protein Twix Base Ingredients in measuring cups.

Almond flour Almond Flour helps to create the chewy base of these protein Twix. It adds to the protein value and also adds healthy fats, making them more satisfying. You can also use Almond Meal (Ground Almonds) or any other nut flour or ground nuts. I have not tested this with any other flour, but oat flour might work too; you’ll likely just need to add more liquid.

Vanilla protein powder I love using protein powder in desserts as it’s an easy way to add extra protein to your diet in a delicious way. I use Vanilla Whey Protein, but you can use vegan protein powder to make vegan Twix (read notes).

Milk – This helps to bring the Twix base to the right consistency and also adds extra protein. I use Whole Milk, but you can use any cow’s milk or even plant milk to make vegan Twix bars. Alternatively, you can use milk. The amount of milk you use depends on your protein powder, so be sure to read the recipe notes.

Nut Butter Caramel Ingredients in measuring cups.

Nut butterTo make an easy and healthy caramel layer, nut butter does the trick. The nutty flavor complements the nutty base and tastes incredible dipped in chocolate. It also adds to the protein and fats of these Twix bites, making them a satisfying sweet treat. I use smooth peanut butter but you can use almond butter, cashew butter, or any other nut or seed butter.

Liquid sweetener To add a touch of sweetness to the protein Twix while still keeping them refined sugar-free. I like to use honey because it’s nice and thick, but you can use maple syrup, agave, date syrup, etc.

Dark chocolate To add an irresistible chocolate coating to your protein Twix. Dark chocolate is a great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient; and YES – it is healthy! Try to use refined sugar-free dark chocolate like this one.

Equipment Needed

  • Digital Food Scale: To accurately measure your ingredients.
  • Mixing Bowl: As there are three elements to these protein Twix, you can use three separate mixing bowls OR use one and just wash it between each element.
  • Fork or Spatula: To combine your ingredients.
  • Small Baking Tin: I use a 20cm x 10cm Loaf tin, but to be honest, the shape doesn’t matter, just make sure it’s not too big.
  • Knife: To cut your protein Twix into bite-sized pieces.

How to Make No-Bake Protein Twix

Here is a detailed summary of how to make these Protein Twix, I’ve also included some photos and you can watch the recipe video here. At the bottom of this page is a summarized version that can be printed.

Step One:
Start by making your No-Bake Twix Base: add the almond flour, protein powder, and milk to a bowl and mix with a fork or spatula to combine. The end result should be slightly sticky, but not wet – a similar consistency to cookie dough. If the mixture is too wet, add some more protein powder and if it’s too dry, add a small splash more liquid.

Step Two:
Press your base mixture into the bottom of your baking tin – if your tin is not silicone, make sure to insert some baking paper so that it’s easier to remove them from the tin later.

Step Three:
Add your nut butter and liquid sweetener to a bowl and mix with a fork until smooth. You can add a pinch of salt to make it more like salted caramel.

Step Four:
Spread the Nut Butter Caramel onto the base in a smooth, even layer then pop it in the freezer for at least an hour to set.

Step Five:
Remove the Twix from the tin and then cut it into 16 small pieces.

Step Six:
Now, melt the dark chocolate using a double boiler or in the microwave, avoiding burning by using 30-second increments. Place each Twix bite onto a fork and then use a spoon to cover the protein Twix with dark chocolate.

Step Seven:
Place the Twix on some baking paper and then place it in the freezer until the chocolate has set. You can store them in the fridge or freezer.

A Note About Protein Powder

I’ve used many different protein powders in my day and I’m afraid to tell you that they’re all different. Some protein powders absorb more liquid, some less; which makes using protein powders in recipes like these a bit tricky. BUT there’s an easy solution to this problem – simply watch the amount of liquid that you add.

Start with the amount of milk listed in the recipe card below and then if you notice your mixture is too dry, add a small splash more liquid (literally half a tablespoon at a time) until you reach the correct consistency. If you feel the mixture is too wet, add some extra protein powder.

Tips to make the best protein twix

Measure Ingredients Accurately: Since this recipe doesn’t require baking, precise measurements are crucial for achieving the right consistency in each layer.

Adjust Consistency: If the base mixture feels too dry, add a small splash of milk or liquid sweetener to moisten it. Conversely, if it’s too wet, incorporate a bit more almond flour or protein powder until it reaches a cookie dough-like consistency.

Line Baking Tin: If your baking tin isn’t silicone, line it with parchment paper before pressing in the base mixture. This will make it easier to remove the Twix Bites once they’re set.

Smooth Caramel Layer: When spreading the nut butter caramel layer over the base, aim for a smooth and even distribution to ensure consistent flavor in each bite.

Freezing Time: Allow enough time for the Twix Bites to freeze completely before slicing and dipping in chocolate. This will help the chocolate coating set properly and prevent any melting or dripping when served.

Cutting Technique: Use a sharp knife to cut the frozen Twix Bites into small pieces. Wiping the knife with a warm, damp cloth between cuts can help create clean edges.

Add a crunch: I sometimes like to add some chopped nuts to my nut butter caramel or on top the chocolate to add a crunch.

How to store no-bake twix

Refrigeration: Store the Protein Twix Bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. This helps maintain their freshness and texture.

Freezing: This is my preferred place to store these Protein Twix. I keep them in the freezer and then just grab one when I want a sweet snack. You can store them in the freezer for up to three months. To prevent the Twix Bites from sticking together during storage, place parchment paper between layers if stacking them in a container. These don’t usually freeze solid, so you can enjoy them straight from the freezer.

Room Temperature: While they can be kept at room temperature for a short period, it’s best to store them in the fridge or freezer to maintain their shape and texture, especially if you live in a warm climate.

FAQ

Can I use a different type of nut flour or ground nuts?

Yes, you can substitute almond flour with other nut flours or ground nuts such as cashew flour or hazelnut meal. Just keep in mind that it may slightly alter the flavor and texture.

Can I use a different flavor of protein powder?

Yes, you can use a different flavor of protein powder, but it will alter the taste of the Twix Bites. Vanilla protein powder provides a neutral flavor that complements the other ingredients, but feel free to experiment with flavors like chocolate or caramel.

Do I have to freeze the Twix Bites?

Yes, freezing the Twix Bites helps them set and hold their shape. If you skip this step, they may be too soft and fall apart when you try to coat them in chocolate.

Do I have to use a loaf tin?

No, you don’t have to use a loaf tin specifically for this recipe. The choice of tin shape is flexible. While the original recipe suggests using a loaf tin (20cm x 10cm), you can use any similar-sized container or baking dish that is suitable for shaping and freezing the Twix mixture. The shape of the tin won’t affect the taste or texture of the final product, so feel free to use whatever you have available that can hold the mixture and fit in your freezer. Just ensure it’s not too large to maintain the desired thickness of the Twix Bites. If your tin is not silicone, consider lining it with parchment paper for easy removal of the Twix Bites once they’re set.
